Solution:

WCD was contracted to provide turnkey services for complete removal of asbestos/mold/hazardous materials and interior demolition from the Plaza Towers annex and main 44 story tower building, located in downtown New Orleans. WCD partnered with a local environmental consultant to conduct an original building survey in 2003. Upon the survey completion, WCD provided abatement estimates and a project design, as required under Louisiana state asbestos regulations. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 additional emergency evaluation, cleanup, and monitoring were required due to widespread damage to the structure, damage to asbestos and resulting dispersal, and rampant mold proliferation caused by extensive water infiltration. The building was previously the focus of several lawsuits regarding asbestos exposure prior to being vacated, and retained a stigma in the local real estate market as a troubled building. As a result, the building owner contracted with WCD for complete environmental abatement and interior demolition, undertaken by WCD as the environmental construction manager (at risk). The size of the project made it the largest single building asbestos removal in the United States at the time.

The 15-month project was executed under stringent engineering, health and safety, and environmental monitoring and clearance protocols exceeding regulatory requirements, and was completed on schedule and within budget, with no lost time accidents. The project is an example of comprehensive asbestos management capabilities, which include inspection, design, and remediation management.
