Environmental Risk Management – Madison Square Garden

Project challenge:

WCD Group was retained as an environmental risk manager and to provide field supervision support to Turner Construction Company in the renovation works of Madison Square Garden.

Clients:

Madison Square Garden, Turner Construction Company

Value:

$2.6 Million

Solution:

Subsequent to the award of the asbestos abatement contract by Turner Construction Company, WCD Group was contracted to review the asbestos abatement bids submitted to Turner, and to advise on potential areas of concern during the scheduled abatement project. WCD worked closely with our client and the trade superintendents to forecast potential environmental issues and identify solutions. We also liaised with a third party environmental consultant to provide independent air monitoring.

WCD also provided industrial hygiene services and worker exposure assessments related to the environmental contaminants normally generated during general construction activities. As part of our IH services, WCD conducted comprehensive work site hazard assessment and personal exposure OSHA compliance monitoring for construction trades during major structural and interior renovation. We also assessed site conditions following environmental events (floods, sprinkler release, fire). WCD sampled for personal exposure contaminants including lead, welding/cutting fumes, respirable silica, and asbestos. Response to events included development of response scope (i.e., extent of drying, cleaning, remediation and/or demolition), oversight, and final quality assurance inspection and/or environmental sampling.
